[Bolton stops with his hand on the plunger of the french press, and slowly leans his weight against it, depressing it slowly.]

Well, hello to you too. Coffee?

Pass, thanks. Seein' paradoxes handed out like candy tends to put me off my appetite a little. Seriously, what the hell makes you think you can do that?

Eh, I dunno. It seemed like something that would incentivize a lot of you. Not, you, obviously, especially since there's not really a lot of you left.

[He pours himself a cup of coffee and takes the time to cup his hand over the mouth, letting the steam gather before breathing deep and letting out a content sigh. There's a copy of It on the table next to the french press.]

You seem pretty sure someone's gonna take the bait.

[Oh ha ha, he's the last of his kind and down to his last few regenerations, very clever.]

Let's say I feel like planning for the worst. And you certainly seem t' think so. This kind of influence doesn't ruin your precious grand experiment or whatever it is?

[Shadow doesn't really think he'll get a whole lot of useful information out of Bolton, but everyone's much more likely to go to Jamie, the concerned and friendlier face. Which is fine, but better to try both avenues.

He's got his envelope, unopened, and some paper, a pen. The envelope gets tossed onto the table in Bolton's direction.]

How do you know?

Why would it? You can't get a diamond without adding a little pressure.

[He takes a sip of his coffee, watching the Doctor over the rim of his cup.]

[Bolton will at least be nice enough to get up and shut the door behind Toby. He leans against the sturdy table and crosses his arms.]

Sure thing, what can I answer for you?

[theoverseers]

Not even a "good morning," what kind of greeting is that?

[he doesn't pick up the envelope, he recognizes it well enough.]

So it's not about leveling the playing field then, it's about what it'll take to push someone to kill.

Oh, no, I've got it. You're not interested in trying to prove anything, this is just your own personal snuff film.

[He holds the cup to his lips for a moment longer than it actually takes to take a sip of coffee, but he gives an insincere grin when he lowers it.]

Well, I get why I can't mess with the ship. [He's not stupid and he's definitely not the Champion Spaceship Repair Penguin.] But IF I wanted to build something, then can I use stuff that's NOT part of the ship? Like, the easels in the Art Room!

Yeah, if it's not nailed down it's fair game. Everything other than the basic structure of the ship itself is here for the Champions to use.

Are you really going to suggest that you, or whoever's funding you, or whoever found out this information, has been watching us all so long that they know everything? That we've been noticed and that there's been some kind of time travel to get this kind of information of us?

Awesome! Oh, but do you know where I can get a battery and maybe a magnet? [He'll look through all the drawers in the kitchen if he has to, but yo. Bolton's right there.] I need them for a super secret project.

[Oh wait, security cameras. No reason to keep this secret from Bolton, really! He'll probably find out what Toby's making. Maybe he'll even be more inclined to give Toby what he wants!]

If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck it might be about to quote Groucho Marx, but I don't think you've got that many layers. This is about pushin' people better than you into dirtyin' their hands for a cheap thrill.

Why wouldn't I suggest that? Where did you think your titles came from? You all caught our attention because you were outstanding in whatever your title is. We had to watch you for a while to know that you were up for the challenge.

I know where mine comes from. I don't know why you chose it over something more pertinent, but that's not the point.

You really do have access to some kind of temporal portal as well as interdimensional travel? The amount of energy, money, technology, people--who are you? Military? Government? Corporation?

[theoverseers]

[His eyebrows go up at the words 'knife launcher.']

Really. I think I can help you out with that. Can it be any kind of battery, or does it need to be something in particular?

[theoverseers]

We're...privately funded. I think J mentioned the "Benefactors?"

You know, you seem so sure about what my motives are, but I don't know what you're in here to do about it.

[Are you trying to guilt him into stopping this whole thing or...]

That could mean a lot of things.

There are security cameras. Is this being aired? This is entertainment for you; is it entertainment for others?

[He asks as he scribbles down--it could be an angry scrawl or just his usual handwriting.] I hope you don't mind if I take some notes.

Sure, go ahead, take notes.

Look- here's what the security cameras do.

[He holds out his right arm - the one with the custom sleeve and sleek touchscreen. Pressing a button on the side wakes up the instrument, and then he taps an icon to pull up a series of smaller screens. The scenes are pretty familiar, since it's just the feed from the omnipresent security cameras.]

You can't expect us to hold a trial if we aren't even sure who the guilty party is.

[He's definitely going to focus on those screens--nothing super important or interesting should be going on, but he has to take whatever brief opportunities he gets.]

I understand, but you can hardly fault me for bringing up any possible option. [Bolton acts like it's an answer, but Shadow notes that it was not a direct answer to the question.] By trial, is this supposed to be some full legal proceeding? Or is that just another game for us to play? Someone dies, we run around trying to figure out who, peace breaks down as we start pointing fingers at each other, see if the culprit gets away or gets caught. Should someone manage to succeed and leave--do they go home, to their own time and dimension?
